Gotta Have a Wreath!

At Christmas time, you just gotta have the wreath on your front door...a wreath is just as important as the tree!
I bought this wreath about twelve years ago at JoAnns, and I love it! Really!  It has held up so well!
It has had three makeovers and still looks brand new even though it lays on the door in the cold weather with the sun shining on it. The sun had faded the glitter ball ornaments from the last two years...it was time for another makeover. I got into my stash of thrift store finds and found a oval wood plaque that I found at the DI (thrift store) for $.75. I chose a Christmas-y piece of Scrapbook paper for the plaque and then headed to one of my favorite stores...the dollar store. I found the glitter berries in cranberry, white and lime green. That matched the paper that I chose. They didn't have ribbon that I liked so I went to Walmart for it. They had the perfect cranberry colored ribbon...YAY!

This is how it all came together...

I painted the plaque white, (the precious moments girl on the front just didn't look Christmas-y enough...hehehe) then when it was dry, I layed it on the scrapbook paper and traced around it. Cut out the paper modpodge it to the top. Waited for it to dry, then sand the edges of the paper/wood off.

I got out my trusty silhouette and cut the "Merry Christmas" in black vinyl using the font Elise. I stuck it onto the plaque/scrapbook paper, and then did another thin layer of modpodge to seal it. When it was dry, I applied some walnut color stain around the edges, where I had sanded and the plaque was done...well, almost...I had to decide how to put it into the wreath.
First I thought I would stick it onto the wreath on the side...it didn't look good, it was too big for the wreath...I decided to just hang it in the center. That meant I had to drill a couple holes. I got out the drill and drilled two holes about 1 1/2" a part.
Perfect!
Then I laced the ribbon through...the holes they were too big for the ribbon.
Hmmm.
NOW WHAT?
Oh, got I got it!
I laced the ribbon from the back of the plaque, tied a loose knot over the hole. Then put the ribbon through the other hole and then tied a loose knot on it also. (like you would if you were sewing) Then I used my glue gun to hold the knots in place.   I tied the plaque into the center of the wreath with ribbon and then started working with the berries. They were all connected like a floral bunch, so, I just used wire snips to cut them apart. after they were all cut apart, I put them in bunches of three...one of each color and started arranging them where I thought they looked good..I could just "wrap" the wire stems around the wire on the wreath so it was pretty simple. Then I cut the ribbon, made the bows and tied them to the wreath with fishing line.

THE WREATH....

ANOTHER VIEW:

It goes perfect with the outdoors-y look I have on my porch...love the ladder!

What do you think? I'm loving it!

This ornament wreath  is in the inside of my home!  Love it too!

The Gingerbread House

A Christmas tradition that we have every year is buying and decorating a gingerbread house. Well this year I found this gingerbread house recipe and pattern on Pinterest from Simply Recipes.  So... a homemade house is what we were going to do!

We bought some colorful candy to decorate the house with.

We made the dough, rolled it out, and then measured and cut the patterns on paper.

We cut the dough and put it on the baking sheets.
Once they were baked and cooled, we made the icing, and started building.  We started putting the the roof on and hubby suggested that we wait for 30 minutes, but me being my impatient self didn't listen and the house started caving in so we had to take the roof pieces back off...the reason there is frosting on the roof pieces.
So I got the "I told you..."
( Hmph!...OK, He was right.)

After the wait we got to decorate...We had left over dough so we cut out gingerbread men cookies with the intent to decorate and eat..after a taste... We decide that gingerbread smells good, looks good, but the flavor is just not for us!  We don't eat it anyway, so it was fine with us!

We stood the gingerbread men up around the house and used the icing to hold them there.
We had enough dough leftover to make a giant gingerbread man so we used up the rest and Pretty Princess went crazy with it.
Proud of her work!

We joked that her gingerbread looked like a two year old did it...She was laughing so hard at herself!
Love that girlie!

What are some of your traditions?  I would love to hear them!

Thrift Store...Score!

So, I've told you all before how I used to think the thrift store was right out N.A.S.T.Y...
{like, I NEVER went into them...E.V.E.R}
Then  I started seeing all the treasures that other bloggers were finding and transforming into beauties for practically nothing!  Really? OK, I'll bite the bullet and go see what I could find.
Let's just say I got hooked...I got so bad I would have to go on Monday's because I just knew that people just had a yard sale the previous weekend and there would be some "good stuff"
I got to know when the best times to go were so I wasn't fighting the people to look at what was being brought out from the back.
People walk around the store following the carts, just waiting for them to stop so they can start grabbing away.
{The first time I saw it, I was like," WHAT IS GOING ON!"}

Anyway,  Look at these beauties!

My Glitter-y J.O.Y. letters

They were a transformation waiting to happen and for $1.50...SCORE! I knew I could make them into beauties!

1.  Wood letters that had been painted on the backs which looked good, and Christmas wrapping paper covered the fronts.  I ripped off all the paper that I could and then sanded the tops until they were smooth.
2. I used Mod Podge , Red, Silver,Green Glitter
3. I covered the top with Mod Podge (kinda heavy coat) and then Glittered
4. Still Glittering.
5. I used Rustoleum clear coat spray (sorry no picture of that) and coated the glitter with it so that it wouldn't come off!

Worked like a charm and now I have these cuties that have been turned into beauties, that coat me $2.00 total.
I already had the mod podge, I bought the glitter in a 3 pack at the dollar store (and I still have lots left over.)

What's your latest thrift store find?

Ouch...Need some New Skin?

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of New-Skin for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

product-family.png (2 documents, 2 total pages)

We LOVE  this stuff at our house!

My hubby is constantly working with tools and  washing his hands which then leads to cracked skin and hurting fingers!  He swears by this stuff!  He applies it to the cracks on the tips of his fingers and it stays on for days!  It really is a liquid bandage!  When I was doing hair, I would sometimes cut my fingers with the scissors,  When you are working in water the band-aid just doesn't cut it, You have to constantly get a new one because it doesn't stay sticky! New Skin Liquid bandage was a life saver!

Believe it or not, New-Skin® products have been protecting cuts and scrapes for over 100 years.   Not only do they protect your cuts and scrapes with their Liquid Bandage, but they also aid in getting rid of scars with the Scar Fade™ Gel and can help treat poison ivy with their Poison Ivy Treatment.

I'm thinking I need to try the Scar fade Gel! ( You know from the nice oven burns I have on my arms! )

Chocolate Raspberry "BOMB" Cake

;
Thanks to Duncan Hines for sponsoring my writing. There's no limit to the baking possibilities, so grab your favorite Duncan Hines mix and Comstock or Wilderness fruit fillings and Bake On! www.duncanhines.com;.

I love a good cake mix, you know, one that you don't have to do alot of "jazzing" up to...
Well I found a keeper.
This was one of the easiest cakes to make and it seriously looks like a bomb, but tastes the "BOMB!"
The rich Chocolate layers with chunks of dark chocolate were perfect. Truth be told...I am not a dark chocolate fan, but this was really good. Pair it with Raspberry and yummo!

The box mix comes with 2 different mixes. It has the cake batter mix and then a fudge-y chocolate chunk mix. I mixed them up in separate bowls according to the directions. I poured the cake batter into a parchment sheet paper lined 9X13 baking sheet and then added the fudge chocolate by the spoonful to the top and swirled it into the cake batter. Bake it @ 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Raspberry frosting:
I made a half batch of Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting and added 1/2 of the can of Raspberries to it!
Oh my Yumminess!
You could eat this by the spoonful!

When the cake was done and cooled, I sliced in half vertically AND Horizontally to make for layers. I spread the raspberry butter cream onto each layer and put it in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Then I frosted the entire cake with the raspberry butter cream.

I stuck it back in the fridge for 15 minutes. I pulled it out, cut it added some raspberry to the top, and drizzed it with the chocolate sauce.
(If you want the layers to set up more I suggest leaving it in the fridge for at least another 30 minutes.)

We wanted to eat it like...Yesterday...so it was fine for us!

This would be a perfect addition to your Christmas dinner.
Really, it is that easy and yummy.
Ooh, or what about a girls' night...picture all of you giggling and digging your forks into the delicious layered cake.
Speaking of Girls' night...I NEED one of those!
*WINK*

The BEST German Chocolate Cake

It's December 1st that means let the countdown begin!  I Love Christmas, it's such a magical time!
Can I share a little randomness with you all?
So,  I went downstairs to the kitchen (last night) because I wanted some peanuts. There I find my princess making ramen noodles. She asks me to give them a stir for her. Sure. I give them a stir and look at them, then her, then them again and twist a huge bite full onto the fork. Did I blow on them? Nope. Did I even notice the steam coming off of them? Nope. I take a big bite and can't even finish biting down, She laughs..."Mom, I cook those for like 10 minutes." As she comes from the freezer with five ice cubes to drop into it! What? Nice. Was my mouth on fire from those HOT noodles...Um, YEAH! They were so hot they burned my tongue...like so bad that it's smooth, I can't even feel the taste buds! I kept sipping ice water and just let it  sit there to take some of the pain away, I guess that's what I get for stealing a bite! N.E.V.E.R. again. AND to top it all off...I didn't even get the peanuts I went down for. Hmph...

Now that I got that I got that off my chest, you know cause my tongue still hurts,
onto to the OH.SO.YUMMY.CAKE!
I made this deliciousness for my Mom.

Don't ya just want to stick your finger in the frosting?

This double layer yumminess was so good!

I used a chocolate cake mix and "jazzed" it up a little.
Follow directions on the cake mix EXCEPT:
- Instead of water use 1 C. Heavy Cream.
- Add 1 C. sour Cream
- If you aren't using a cake mix with pudding in it, add 1 large pkg.of dry pudding mix.

Bake the cakes in two round cake pans. While they are baking, you can get to work on the frosting.
Did you know that  the traditional German Chocolate Cake is just layers of the cake with the coconut pecan frosting? I mean it would be good that way, but  I wanted to make one that had both Chocolate Butter Cream and the Coconut Pecan, the best of both worlds!

I found this recipe for Butter Cream Chocolate Frosting from The Sweet Life on pinterest
It looked so yummy, I had to try it.

Chocolate Butter Cream Frosting
-The Sweet Life

6 T. Butter
2 2/3 C. Powdered Sugar
1/2 C. Cocoa Powder
1/3 C. Milk
1 tsp. Vanilla
dash of Salt

I doubled the recipe, but NOT the cocoa powder. I only use 1/2 C. total.

Then I made the coconut Pecan frosting.
With this frosting I had sink full of dirty spoons to wash because I just kept tasting it..
OHMYGOSH...it really is that good!

Coconut Pecan Frosting
1 1/4 C. pecans
1 C. granulated white sugar
1 C. Heavy Cream
3 Large egg yolks slightly beaten
1/2 C. unsalted butter cut into pieces
1/8 tsp. salt
1 1/2 C. sweetened flaked coconut
1/2 t. pure vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place the pecans on a baking sheet and bake for about 8-10 minutes, or until fragrant. Remove for oven, let cool and then coarsely chop. In a medium saucepan combine the sugar, cream, egg yolks, butter and salt over med, heat stirring constantly, and when the mixture begins to boil and thicken remove from heat and stir in chopped pecans, coconut, and vanilla extract, let cool until spreadable.

After everything was cool.
(I didn't take pictures of the process...UGH!)

  1. I used a large Wilton star tip to pipe the chocolate butter cream frosting around the edge of what would be the middle of the cake,(on top of the cake to hold the pecan frosting in)
I hope that makes sense.
2. Then I filled it with the pecan coconut frosting and the butter cream became the barrier to hold it in.
3. I layed the other cake on top of those and then frosted the entire cake with the butter cream.
4. I put it in the fridge for 30 minutes and let it just 'sit'
5.  I piped the star edging around the bottom of the cake, then on top of it. Then put the rest of the Coconut Pecan frosting on top of the cake.

That's it.
Seriously you guys, this was wicked good.
Of coarse I left it for her you know, cause it was for her birthday and all.

Ooh, and the best part is...this will not burn your tongue!

Happy Birthday to my cute Mom!  Love you more than forever!

Have a great day!
